Hearing Brightly this Holiday Season

12/18/2017 | Hearing Aids, Hearing Loss, Patient Resources

A large family are all helping serve Christmas dinner.

A Note from Dr. Hubik

Reading to my children is one of my favorite things in life. I know that there will be a day when they won’t want me to read anymore, so I am soaking it up as much as possible. Recently we read a book called, “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio. It’s a wonderful book about a 5th grade boy named August with facial anomalies and other challenges such as hearing loss. It is a book that teaches us to treat people who look different than we look with respect. It encourages us to view people by what is inside instead of what is visible to the eye. It is also a story about standing up for friends when others are mean to them.

My favorite part of the story was when the main character, August received his hearing aids for the first time. He knew, because of his diagnosis, that the day would come when he would need to wear hearing aids and he was really dreading it. Many of our patients although they are much older, feel the same way I am sure. August’s mother took him to an audiologist and August’s response to better hearing really touched me. He described it as “hearing brightly”.

“It was like when you’re in a room where one of the lightbulbs on the ceiling isn’t working, but you don’t realize how dark it is until someone changes the lightbulb and then you’re like, whoa, it’s so bright in here! I don’t know if there’s a word that means the same as ‘bright’ in terms of hearing, but I wish I knew one, because my ears were hearing brightly now.”

As your audiologists at Cornerstone Audiology, we wish you nothing but the brightest of hearing this holiday season and we are so thankful to be on this journey of better hearing with you.

Sincerely,
Dr. Hubik

Do you know somebody that needs to see this? Why not share it?
